Principal’s Biography

Dr. Omar Monteagudo is the Principal of the School for Advanced Studies (SAS) and the Academy for Advanced Academics at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, a Master of Arts in Political Science and Latin American Studies, and a Doctor of Law.

Dr. Monteagudo is also an Executive Lead Principal and chairs the Senior High School Principal’s Committee for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools South Region. He has contributed to various district and regional committees and led professional development initiatives in areas such as finance, evaluation calibration, payroll, and differentiated instruction.

Under Dr. Monteagudo’s leadership, SAS has become a nationally recognized institution. In 2024, U.S. News & World Report ranked it as the 3rd best high school in the United States, while the Daily Beast ranked it 13th, and Newsweek listed it among the top 500 STEM high schools. Additionally, Niche named it the 10th Best Collegiate High School in America, and Money Inc. recognized it as the Best Public High School in Florida. SAS maintains an ‘A’ rating in Florida and is designated a School of Excellence by the Florida Department of Education.

Dr. Monteagudo has earned multiple accolades throughout his career, including being named Miami-Dade County Public Schools Region Principal of the Year, Region Assistant Principal of the Year Finalist, and Region Teacher of the Year. He has also received District-level honors, such as District Social Studies Teacher of the Year and District Rookie Teacher of the Year. Additionally, he is a past fellow of the Florida Supreme Court Teaching Institute and a distinguished Cahn Fellow.

Before becoming a principal, Dr. Monteagudo held various roles, including Assistant Principal, Advanced Placement Teacher, and Attorney. He also serves as an adjunct professor in the Education Policy Studies Graduate Program at FIU. Dr. Monteagudo is an active member of the Florida Bar, where he has previously chaired the Schools Program Committee of the Dade Bar Association and served on the Education Committee for the Florida Bar.
