I have faced numerous transitions in my life. I was born and raised in Azerbaijan, and experienced my first major transition when my family and I moved across continents to the United States, specifically to Chicago, Illinois. As a nine-year-old, I was filled with worry and uncertainty during this change. Fast forward five years to the end of my sophomore year of high school, when I learned we were moving again, I was sure all my past emotions would resurface. Little did I know that we were moving to Miami, and that a seemingly simple decision my family and I would make afterward would turn this transition into one of the best experiences I could have had. This decision was to enroll in the School for Advanced Studies.
Initially, I did not know much about SAS except that it was one of the best schools in the nation and had a rigorous academic curriculum. I knew I would be academically challenged, but I did not anticipate the invaluable life lessons and experiences I would gain from the incredible community of faculty, staff, and students. SAS quickly became more than just a school—it became a home. From the meaningful conversations in class to the friendships I made in the hallways, every moment helped me form a sense of belonging that I so deeply needed. What makes SAS unique is that it offers something for everyone: whether you want to excel academically, compete in Olympiads, or perform community service, you will find opportunities that inspire and support you.
SAS has been a life-changing experience for me, one I will forever cherish and proudly carry with me. Without the support and resources at SAS, I could not have achieved one of my lifelong dreams: getting admitted to MIT. While I had an unconventional start with SAS because I had not grown up or attended another school around here, it made my transition to Miami fill with ease and confidence. I will always feel proud and grateful to have been a part of the SAS family. To future students, embrace every opportunity SAS offers because you will grow wiser, more resilient, and create memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.
